Panic Attacks
What are Panic Attacks?
A panic attack is an unpredictable sudden rush of intense fear and anxiety that comes often without warning and without any obvious reason. Because of their unpredictable nature, intense anxiety may develop between attacks. This ongoing fear is a symptom of panic disorder.
Also, because panic attacks can be unpredictable, people often worry about them happening when they have to go into a public place. This can cause the person to avoid any situation where a panic attack might happen. In extreme cases, people develop agoraphobia where they may be unable to leave their home unless accompanied by another trusted person.
A panic attack can be very frightening but it is not dangerous.
How Do You Deal With Panic Attacks?
First you must break the vicious cycle of fear - panic - avoidance.
Learn how to relax. Muscle tension is an instinctive response – it is not a response that we learn. Conversely relaxation has to be learned. Relaxation is the antidote to stress, anxiety and fear – the more relaxation you bring into your life then the less effect stress will have on you.
Learn how to breathe more slowly, more deeply. When you are tense you breathe quickly and shallowly (panting). This can cause you to hyperventilate.
Learn how to meditate. I cannot recommend this highly enough. The meditation that I practise doesn’t involve philosophy or religion nor is it a pathway to spiritual enlightenment. It is merely a means of reducing anxiety and stress. While I meditate I experience a mental calmness and ease. What is more this calmness continues long after my meditation.
My low cost Book shows you these and other simple techniques that helped me recover from stress, anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia. It will help you get your life back to where you want it to be. |
